Cocuy: A Closer Look

El Cocuy is one of the places that makes Colombia such a unique place on earth. Being the biggest mass of snow and ice found within northern Latin-America, the park includes 22 snow-peak mountains, lakes tucked among the mountains, crystal-clear creeks flowing gently across huge valleys, and native vegetation. Given the diverse range of activities, this area is a perfect destination for high-mountain experts and beginners alike. This 3-day trip from Bogotá is the best way to visit this natural wonder; no experience required.

ITINERARY

Night one:

After being picked up from your hotel by an English-speaking guide, you will head to the bus terminal. You will take a comfortable overnight bus to El Cocuy, where you will arrive on the next morning.

Day one:

You will roll around town at 7 am and have breakfast at El Cocuy village upon arrival. After, you will get on jeeps, heading to Hacienda la Esperanza, at 3.600MASL. There, you can leave your things in the cabins, and get ready for the first hike. You will have an acclimatization hike in the area to get acquainted with the altitude and terrain. That night, you will have a delicious meal, and go to bed early to rest up for the next day’s hike.

Day two:

You will wake up early in the morning and have a nutritious breakfast for the main hike. The trek will last around 8 hours and will take you through the outstanding “Valle de Los Frailejones” in the páramo until you reach the big lagoon of the Sierra at 4.400MASL. From there on, you will hike a bit more until Púlpito del Diablo, right at the snow edge of the Pan de Azúcar summit. You will have a lunch stop during the hike and head back after exploring the area. Back at the Hacienda, a delicious dinner will be waiting before you go to rest.

Day three:

After taking your breakfast at the farm, you will be taken to some natural hot springs in the town of Güicán for a relaxing dip. After, you will have lunch at the village and take the bus back to Bogotá with the guide. Once in Bogotá, you will be driven back to your hotel. Arrival is expected around 11:00 pm.
