We live in a country of misty mountains, valleys, very rich soil, and hardworking people. All that together creates the perfect conditions for growing coffee. This has been a major development driver and a reason for pride for every Colombian. As a result, we are one of the main coffee producers and we grow the best arabica coffee worldwide.
With just a 2-hour drive southwest of Bogotá, the weather gets warmer and an awarded high-quality coffee is grown carefully among steep mountains, dense native forests, and low-flying clouds. La Palma & El Tucán is a self-sustained farm that not only produces specialty coffee but they also benefit coffee-growing families in the region, supporting fair-trade and eco-farming.
As you reach the destination, you will feel a slight change in temperature; a few degrees warmer at approx. 1600 MASL which opens the possibility of coffee growing close to the big city. Among lush green mountains and slow-paced clouds, you will enter the farm, passing through their specialty coffee plantations until you reach the coffee bar area. You will be greeted with a warm, fresh and aromatic welcome: a special coffee brewed carefully to highlight the exquisite flavors of Colombian Coffee.
After enjoying your coffee and being introduced to the place, you will receive an explanation of how they benefit local farmers by purchasing their best quality cherries. The farm buys at the best international price and runs workshops on organic fertilizers and best soil management for the farmers. You will witness the different stages of the coffee process - starting with the seeds, moving on to transplantation, crops and harvest. You will visit the organic compost shed and production warehouse and visit the machinery behind the process and learn the steps needed to turn recently picked coffee beans into the coffee you see packaged on the markets.
Finally, you will be taken to take a delicious lunch prepared with many ingredients found in the farm. Afterwards, you can enjoy the interactive approach tasting 3 different coffees learning more from the local guide before returning to Bogotá along an impressive scenic drive.
How this tour creates an impact
La Palma y el Tucán is not only a breathtakingly beautiful place to develop a deep understanding of coffee but is also a community-driven social project. By selling their coffee, called neighbors & crops, they support smaller, neighboring coffee farmers. Often smaller coffee producers struggle to create a sustainable business around commercializing their product. La Palma y el Tucán offers a solution to this problem by taking over the logistics of distributing and processing the coffee so that farmers can focus on the quality of their product.
