The Hidden Jewel of Colombia: Discovering Caño Cristales

In the heart of Colombia lies one of the world's most enchanting natural wonders: Caño Cristales, known as the "River of Five Colors." This vibrant river, located in the Serranía de la Macarena National Park near La Macarena, showcases a mesmerizing display of colors due to the presence of unique aquatic plants in its waters.

Exploring Caño Cristales, nestled within the Serranía de la Macarena and the Guiana Shield, is an extraordinary adventure into Colombia's natural and cultural heritage. This region, characterized by its dense rainforests, vast savannas, and unique geological formations, is a testament to the country's rich biodiversity and geological history. The Guiana Shield, one of the oldest geological formations on Earth, provides the backdrop for Caño Cristales, offering a glimpse into a landscape shaped over millions of years.

The Serranía de la Macarena, where Caño Cristales flows, is not only a haven for unique flora and fauna but also a sanctuary for conservation efforts. The Macarenia clavigera, a colorful aquatic plant endemic to the region, transforms the river into a breathtaking display of colors during the rainy season. This phenomenon, known as the "Liquid Rainbow," attracts visitors from around the world who come to witness nature's palette at its most vibrant.

Caño Cristales and its surroundings offer not only a glimpse into Colombia's ecological diversity but also a deep connection with its peace and environmental conservation efforts. Plan your visit to experience this hidden gem and witness firsthand the kaleidoscope of colors that adorn the River of Five Colors.

History of Peace and Natural Beauty

Beyond its natural beauty, Caño Cristales is a symbol of resilience and conservation in Colombia. Once affected by internal conflicts, the region has been revitalized through community-driven efforts to protect its ecosystems and promote sustainable tourism. Today, visitors can explore Caño Cristales through guided tours that emphasize environmental stewardship and respect for the area's cultural heritage.

How to Get to Caño Cristales

To start this magical adventure, you need to take a flight from Bogota or Medellin with Clic Air or Satena Airlines, the only two commercial airlines that fly to La Macarena. To check availability and fares, visit their websites or contact us for assistance with organizing your trip. Alternatively, you can explore options with charter airlines that fly directly from Villavicencio or the previously mentioned cities at a slightly higher price but with more frequent flights. Ask us here if you want more information about charter flights.

The Magical Plants that Paint the River

The stunning colors of Caño Cristales are the result of Macarenia clavigera, a unique species of aquatic plant that thrives in the clear waters of the river. During the rainy season, from June to November, the plants bloom in vibrant shades of red, pink, green, blue, and yellow, creating a unique spectacle.

During the summer season (Dec-May), as the water levels of Caño Cristales recede, ancient stone carvings hidden beneath the river's surface are unveiled. These intricate carvings, believed to date back centuries, depict symbols and figures that offer tantalizing clues about the indigenous peoples who once inhabited these lands. The discovery of these carvings not only adds a layer of mystique to the region but also underscores its importance as a cultural and historical treasure trove.

Recommendations for Your Visit

1. Preparation for Walking: Arrive in La Macarena dressed appropriately from day one, ready for hikes. Ensure you have everything you need for the first day of exploration in your bag.

2. Sun Protection (Prohibited): Due to strict regulations, sunscreen is not allowed in Caño Cristales and Caño Cristalitos. Use clothing that protects you well from the sun: long-sleeved shirts, a wide-brimmed hat, pants, and comfortable, non-slip shoes that you don't mind getting wet. Sunscreen is allowed in other places.

3. Personal Preparation: Before setting out to walk, make sure you have visited a bathroom, as there are no facilities in the tourist sites.

4. Appropriate Footwear: Avoid trekking boots as they are difficult to dry if wet. We recommend using trekking sandals or trainers with good grip. The riverbed is rocky but not rough, although you can bring additional water shoes for swimming.

5. Swimsuit and Additional Gear: Bring a swimsuit and, if you like exploring underwater, consider bringing a mask and snorkel.

6. Useful Accessories: Polarized sunglasses not only protect your eyes from the sun but also help you see the plants and the riverbed better.

7. Preparation for the Weather: The weather can change quickly, from intense sun to heavy rain in minutes. Bring a poncho or waterproof jacket to stay dry during hikes and boat rides.

8. Small Backpack: Bring a small backpack to carry your personal belongings and the lunch we provide at La Manigua Lodge.

9. Reusable Bottle: In La Macarena, the use of single-use plastics is prohibited. It is essential to bring your own reusable bottle or hydration bladder with a capacity of 1.5 - 2 liters of water, the recommended amount for hikes in Caño Cristales. Disposable plastic bottles are confiscated by National Parks before entering the park.

10. Microfiber Towel: The towels we provide at La Manigua stay in the hotel to dry. We recommend bringing your own towel, preferably microfiber, which dries easily and is lightweight for hikes.

11. Photography Equipment: If you are a photography enthusiast, consider bringing a polarizing filter. This will help you eliminate reflections on the water and highlight the vibrant colors of the plants in your photos.

12. Yellow Fever Vaccine (Not Mandatory):Although not mandatory, the yellow fever vaccine is recommended due to La Macarena's tropical location. You should get vaccinated at least 10 days before the trip and bring your vaccination card. This vaccine is mandatory for those coming from Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, or Brazil.

Clothing Selection for Caño Cristales

Here is a table to help you select the most suitable clothing for your visit:

- Light and Fresh Clothing: Long-sleeved shirts, lightweight and comfortable pants.
- Appropriate Footwear: Comfortable, non-slip shoes that you can get wet.
- Hat or Cap: To protect you from the sun.
- Swimwear: Swimsuit and additional clothing for swimming.
- Waterproof Layer: Poncho or waterproof jacket for possible sudden weather changes.
