Description
Check out this reportage from Travel Life Experiences: amazing video report from Travel Life Experiences about the Breaking Borders Project.
Learn about the impressive history of a group of locals from the Egipto neighborhood in Bogotá. Deciding to leave their criminal past behind they have started the initiative Breaking Borders, showing tourists around their streets filled with artwork that tells the neighborhood’s history. In this way, tourism has formed a real alternative for their personal and professional development and opened the doors to generate a connection between the change and transformative narratives with a resilient and welcoming society. .
You will start by meeting your Impulse Travel guide in El Chorro Quevedo, the founding place of Bogotá, There you will learn about the project while drinking a coffee or agua panela before heading to Nuestra Señora de Egipto, the church located at the entrance of Barrio Egipto, where the local leaders of Breaking Borders will be waiting for you.
Start going up the Calle Real or Royal Street, once the people’s only connection to the city, leading you deeper into the neighborhood. Your guide will then stop with you at El Cuadrado, a central point in the history of gang fights in the area. While in the past this place was a strategic point for control over the territory for the gangs, today it is painted with pictures that tell you about the history and new values of the people.
Walking uphill through the colorful stone streets of the neighborhood, you will notice first-hand how much the area has changed and transformed into a place of hope, peace, and culture. With mimics and cultural expressions, your local guide will illustrate how things used to work out in the "barrio" back in the days understanding the hidden messages and stories behind many of the murals and street art of Barrio Egipto, making it much more than a Bogota Graffiti Tour..
You will then reach the hills where the modest houses of the local guides and their families are bedded into the steep hills overlooking the vast metropolis down below. Despite the challenging conditions in the neighborhood, the warmth and determination of its people breathe life and joy into the community, inspiring their children to pursue their dreams with passion and resilience. Where many once turned to violence and vengeance, now there is hope, as the new generation fights for a brighter future.
At the end of the tour, you will pass by the Buena Semilla Foundation, a Christian value organization aiming to support women and children through their textile, wood and music workshops. If you would like to enter the foundation and experience this "oasis in the middle of the desert" firsthand please check out our add-ons!
This experience breaks borders beyond reality with the purpose of connecting us as humans, allowing us to put ourselves in the other's shoes and understand without judging other points of view, to help people move beyond the difficult decisions they made in the past, as they take responsibility and adopt actions and ideologies to ensure that such suffering never happens again.
Important information
How this tour creates an impact
The leaders of the Breaking Borders project want to change the neighborhood's narrative of violence and give a positive example to the youth in the area by creating an urban tourism project that tells their own stories using the art of graffiti and rap. On an extended version of the tour, you’ll visit the wood and weaving workshops of the NGO Buena Semilla. Breaking Borders and Buena Semilla contribute the community processes from the support of children, youth and women.
This tour is part of our HEART experiences.

A fascinating tour unlike any other
★★★★★
This tour was unlike any other we had done. The guides are candid about the reality of their neighbourhood, but their optimism and enthusiasm shines through. This made for an extremely interesting and moving visit. It showed us a facet of Bogota that many locals are not comfortable discussing, and left quite an impression on our 13- and 11-year old children who consider this experience one of their highlights of our time in Bogota.

Inspirational & Heart warming
★★★★★
Our first tour in Columbia which gave us an insight into how many poor Columbian’s have little or no education & end up in gangs. The ex gang members who guided us are ready embracing the responsibility & the chance of turning their lives around with the help of Breaking Borders Charity. We also loved the ladies at the weaving workshop where we bought a beautiful hand loomed rug at a very reasonable price. It made us feel good that the money would go to them personally & help them manage their finances. This part was a bit rushed so think the tour should be 3 hours instead of 2,as we would have liked to spend more time talking to them.Perhaps the starting point would be better outside the church as we came by taxi & it would have saved us the steep climb up from the square. We would not have met these people generally so it was good to see how they survive when across the big main road there is an affluent life going on.I hope that 1 day they will cross that road ..Inspirational tour.

Amazing experience in Egipto
★★★★★
Amazing experience in Egipto with the gang members understanding their past, the history of the place and the current challenges and threats they still face. The group we met were very friendly, welcoming and super nice to us. We loved meeting them and spending time with them and would recommend all tourists to Bogota to do a tour with the gang to learn about how they are looking to change their lives now. Cannot recommend this tour enough whether done directly with the people in Egipto or with a translator from a tour company.

Impressive and touching
★★★★★
This tour is off the beaten track and was very impressive for my husband and I.Since we lived in Bogota a long time ago, we were always warned against going into these neighborhoods and we also saw the amount of misery that exists among the poorer people. It was all the more impressive to receive up-close reports and stories from the “former gang”. The boys have all our respect for pulling off something like this.
We found the price of the tour relatively expensive, but if the majority of the proceeds go to the people of the "Barrio Egipto", the money is in good hands.
I would like to see a corresponding note on the “Breaking Borders” homepage.”

★★★★★
I read on sites " best experience " and now I do understand why ❤️ In company of Harrold y Pato del barrio de Egipto y Raul de Impulse travel I had an easy walk of a few hours just steps away from the so touristic" plaza del chorro de quevedo"en La Candelaria barrio. Amazing way to ear story of a breaking vicious circle of violence and drugs, told by people with strong character who succeed in changing immovable destinies. The force that emanates from it is the force of life and " No Words " the best summary of an adventure that no visitor should be without. a mandatory visit.

Breaking Borders - Bogota's Social Change Experience
★★★★★
Mr. Pumpkin, the former gang leader turned tour guide, provided extremely interesting information about his life in the gang and in the barrio. He was very animated, upbeat, and well-informed. Moreover, his story and that of the community’s positive transformation were inspirational. Our English tour guide Raul was also great. Super-good tour!!

One of our most memorable trips-and we travel a lot
★★★★★
We had the most amazing tour planned by Juliana with Raoul Posse as our guide in Bogota and Anna Christina in Medellín. The focus was on Weaving Peace had multiple profound experiences, where we witnessed and interacted with people that are working towards and making progress in healing their communities and their country from their painful, violent history. In addition, we went to a coffee farm and had a great bike ride with Marco and Ana Maria outside of Medellín. It was a perfect trip. The guides went the extra mile for us, taking photos, recommending music and attending concerts with us (which was not part of the program). We loved Colombia and plan to return. Impulse Agency was a find and would use them again in a heartbeat.

Just magical
★★★★★
When we decided to visit Colombia I searched for a local agency that was aligned with our interests in culture, history, both old and contemporary and importantly, social justice. Impulse took care if all of it!! We spent ten days in Bogota and Medellín and surrounds [...]
But what really stood out were the incredible guides we had. Raul in Bogota and Marcos, Ana Maria and Ana Cristina in Medellin. Mature, hip, knowledgeable and fun!! We learned so much. I have only one complaint: we needed more time to explore more of this amazing country. We will be back. And will definitely be using Impulse again!

Egipto with a local
★★★★★
Breaking Borders is a fascinating walk through Egipto, a neighborhood that has a history and past of violence and gangs that is now at peace with its past and the citizens are creating a better tomorrow for the youth. You'll hear some interesting stories about events that have happened here, told by the members of the gangs that experienced them. They are sincerely hoping to make a better future for their neighbors and their younger residents.
Impulse Travel is easy to work with and arranges everything. You'll be paired with a guide/translator and a local guide/resident of Egipto to accompany you along the streets of the neighborhood. Every corner, wall and street has a story!

Must see - in bogota!
★★★★★
It was a true experience to be with impulse travel and meeting breaking borders. We had a pleasure knowing about the history of the area and of course, history of egipto. This is A MUST to do - also to really get a look into some political issues and how breaking borders really wants to change and unite all.
Thank you so much for that beautiful experience and seeing all the mural art!

Breaking borders teens open their barrio egypto to counter illegality and drug trafficking, tell its story through graffiti, cultivation projects, sports and music that create social aggregation. The accompaniment of the impulse travel guide was a great help in contextualizing the relationship between the city and the barrio before arriving
