On this overnight trip we will go to the periphery of Mompox to meet a local folklore group who have safeguarded the cumbia tradition of “Bailes Cantados” for generations.
From Cartagena to Santa Cruz de Mompox takes approximately 4 hour drive south-east (270km). You will arrive to a colorful colonial town that will give you a feeling of being in another time. Recognized as a UNESCO heritage town in 1995, this place will charm you with its abundant history and impressive living culture.
After your arrival, you will have a traditional lunch by mighty Magdalena River, one of Colombia’s most important rivers, and the one that once brought huge prosperity to Mompox. You will then have a hotel break before going on a bike tour through town where you will get to know its many churches, plazas and charming streets. There is an optional experience to visit a filigree workshop where you can see amazing crafts and the talented jewel makers that keep alive the long tradition of filigree in the region.
In the evening, you will have a music experience called “Bailes Cantados” (chanted dances) with Don Abundio and his collective of musicians. Don Abundio is the leader and director of a local school that promotes heritage through dance and music. He has been working for decades with kids and young people that are preserving a future for traditional music and dance. Here, you will have a behind the scenes experience to witness the components of a carnival such as masks and costumes as well as having a complete demonstration of dances, rhythms and chants. A unique immersion.
The following morning you will have the included breakfast and you can have the morning free to walk around town, go birdwatching or even a visit to Pijiño Wetlands, becuause of its beauty and biodiversity is a breathtaking location. You will return to Cartagena after lunch.
