Cocora Valley is one of Colombia's must-go places. It's nice tempered weather, impressively tall endemic Wax Palms, dense cloud-forests, and wide biodiversity sum up a very rich ecosystem definitively worth contemplating and hiking. Joined by an experienced mountain guide, you will be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery while you learn about the nature of this one-of-a-kind place.
You will be picked up at your hotel in Salento to drive you to the entrance of Cocora Valley through a nice countryside road. As soon as you arrive you will hear some recommendations before moving on to the hike. Starting at the outermost of the forest, you will see how cattle raising has affected the ecosystem leaving only tall Wax Palms among the pastures. Moving on, you will leave cattle lands and enter an impressively rich ecosystem in which Wax Palms naturally grow. This dense forest condenses plenty of water due to the frequent fog that travels among the mountains. Humidity and this particular weather condition help to the formation of various types of orchids and bromeliads that grow among tree branches, so don't forget to look up!
Depending on your rhythm, the hike will take you to La Montaña or further into Acaime. With some attention, you will be able to see colorful hummingbirds and maybe other impressive birds such as the Barranquero. During the hike, you will have some snacks and your lunch before returning you to your hotel in Salento.
